Major winter storm blankets DC area in half a foot of snow or more

Winter storm warnings are in effect for D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia as the first major snowstorm of 2025 dropped at least 6-10 inches of snow

  • Officials asked people to stay off the roads. Many school districts closed Monday and will be closed again Tuesday, and hundreds of flights have been canceled. Metrorail is running normally, but Metrobus service is reduced.

The D.C. region's first snowstorm of 2025 saw many areas get 6-12 inches of snow that brought school and government closures, dangerous road conditions and transportation troubles. Many school closures will continue into Tuesday, and those who don't need to drive are still being encouraged to stay off the roads.
