The D.C. area awoke to a winter wonderland. Several inches of snow have fallen, and there's still more to come.
When all is said and done, most of the D.C. metro area will end up with 6-10 inches of snow. Where some of the heavier bands are set up, there will be many reports in the 12-inch range.

The steadiest snow will come before noon Monday. Expect 6-8 inches to be on the ground by 2 p.m. Snowfall rates should drop for a few hours Monday afternoon before a final wraparound band of snow Monday evening and night. That last hit of snow should be worth another 2 inches, which is why so many places have a chance to reach 10 inches to maybe 12-inch totals.
The biggest thing that will impact totals at this point will be the snow ratios. On average, you can expect about 10 inches of snow for what would have been one inch of rain. The colder it is during the event the higher the ratio will get. For example, snow at 25° is more likely to be 12 inches of snow per inch of liquid, whereas snow at 33° would be 6 inches of snow per inch of rainfall.
Forecast temperatures for this event will be in the 28-30° range. That's cold enough for all snow and high enough for a liquid content perfect for making snowballs. Quite a wallop that will have long-lasting impacts for the week ahead.

Expect cold conditions all week
Storm Team4 doesn't make the calls for school districts, but Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell doesn't see any way that any of the local cities and counties will be open Monday or Tuesday.
Even Wednesday and Thursday will have plenty of issues thanks to bitterly cold conditions and major re-freezing every night this week.
After the snow, be ready for a bitter cold and windy few days! Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will all be mostly sunny but miserably cold. Daytime highs will likely remain below freezing every day this week with overnight lows in the 10s. To make matters worse, Northwest winds will remain in the 15-25 mph range each day. That will keep wind chills in the 10s every afternoon.
Bundle up. Stay off the roads as best you can. And, most importantly: stay safe.
