4 things to know about the weather

  1. Warm, humid start to last summer weekend
  2. Chance of isolated showers/storms tonight
  3. Showers end, clouds remain Sunday
  4. More clouds, unsettled weather pattern for the week ahead

We're less than 24 hours away from the autumn equinox, which happens at 8:43 Sunday morning. The combination of dwindling daylight and increasing rain chances will definitely give next week the real feeling of fall.

The final weekend of summer brings more clouds than sun, with the possibility of showers and isolated thunderstorms tonight.

What to expect this weekend

A cold front will come through the area Saturday evening. Ahead of the front, Saturday will be plenty warm and humid. Highs should reach the low/mid 80s before thickening clouds and rain chances arrive late in the afternoon and evening hours.

Rain chances Saturday begin as early at 3-4 p.m. for the Shenandoah Valley, with the D.C. metro area’s chances peaking between 8 p.m. and midnight. Rainfall amounts are minimal, most likely going to be in the 1/4" to 1/2" range.

The rain will be over early Sunday morning, but the clouds are likely to hang around. Partly to mostly cloudy skies, but dry conditions, are on tap for Sunday and Monday afternoon, with high temperatures staying in the low/mid 70s.

Rain chances return

Rain chances will return again on Tuesday and impact the rest of next week and weekend. Rain totals from Tuesday through Sunday should end up in the 1.5" to 3.0" range. That amount of rain would go a long way to easing the drought conditions, so let's hope it comes to fruition.

There are still signs of a tropical system forming in the Gulf of Mexico in the second half of next week. It's still too early for anything more specific than that, but a storm in the Gulf could certainly help boost our rain chances in the week after next. Stay tuned. Make it a great weekend.
