4 things to know about the weather:

  1. So much colder Tuesday
  2. Staying dry, next few days
  3. Warm again On Thursday
  4. Weekend showers likely

Last night's rain left a full inch of rain at Reagan National Airport. That's our first full inch of rain on a single day since last Oct. 1! Over the last 6 months, the DMV has had only about half of its average rainfall.

No wonder most of our region remains in a severe drought.

Gusty northwest winds came in behind the rain and will remain an issue through at least the first half of the day. High pressure will settle in and the wind will settle down, briefly, on Tuesday night.

Tuesday will also be remarkably cooler. Highs on Monday made it into the mid-80s. Most areas will just barely get above 60° for a few hours, but at least the sun will be shining.

Some clouds will arrive overnight and our skies will turn increasingly cloudy as Wednesday progresses.

Temperatures will fall to around 40° Tuesday night and reach around 60° again Wednesday afternoon. The wind will also return, from the Southeast, by Wednesday afternoon.

Warm temperatures return later this week

The warm air we were just enjoying didn't go far and will return on Thursday. As a storm travels over the Great Lakes it will turn our wind to the southwest allowing temperatures to get back to around 80° on Thursday afternoon even with cloudy skies and the risk of a few showers toward evening time.

As that Great Lakes storm moves away its trailing cold front will stall out over our area. This will lead to increasing rain chances and a big temperature forecast challenge for Friday and the weekend. Plan for at least some amount of rain each day but no total washouts.

Temperatures will be near 70° on Friday, the mid-60s on Saturday and perhaps near 80° on Sunday. Depending on where the front settles, Fredericksburg, Virginia could be 5° to 10° to even 15° warmer than Frederick, Maryland.

Stay tuned for updates on that weekend forecast as it gets closer. Cooler and drier weather return early next week.
