Storm Team4 Forecast: Remnants of Helene bring rain and cooler temps

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc.

4 things to know about the weather

  1. Rainy and cool Monday
  2. Rain continues Tuesday
  3. Sunshine back on Thursday
  4. Tropics remain active

If it hadn't been for Saturday, Monday would be our eighth cloudy day in a row.

The clouds that returned on Sunday will be with us throughout Monday and Tuesday, bringing occasional periods of rain and keeping temperatures 5° below average.

While there could be a few periods of moderate rain in and around the D.C. metro area, the heavier rain threat is in central Virginia where upwards of another inch of rain is possible.

Rain totals for most of our area will range from 1/4 to 3/4 inches when you add Monday and Tuesday together. These rain chances are the final remnants of what was once the mighty Helene.

High pressure dropping out of Canada will push a cold front through our area on Wednesday leading to a long stretch of gorgeous October weather.

That front could still wring out a few drops of rain on Wednesday before drier air finally takes over. There may even be some late-day clearing, especially for areas west of I-95.

Look forward to a dry weekend

Thursday, Friday and the weekend look warm and sunny. After daytime highs barely reaching 70° Monday and Tuesday, we will be closer to 80° for the end of the week and weekend.

The tropics will also need to be watched this week. There is another tropical wave moving into the same area of the Caribbean that gave us Helene last week.

Not much is likely to happen over the next day or two, but from Wednesday onwards, the risk of another storm begins to increase. There will be the potential for another named storm in the Gulf of Mexico by the weekend.
