This snow event will have a high impact and could begin with a wintry mix with sleet and/or freezing rain at the onset, then all-day snow, most of the day on Monday. Snow ends by early Tuesday Morning. Most areas will experience snowfall totals greater than 6 inches.
Snow is expected to begin late Sunday and continue into Monday afternoon -- and possible totals have ticked upwards. The snowfall forecast map now shows 5"-8" now expected to fall in the metro area, and higher amounts possible north and west of D.C.

Sunday will start off cold and quiet. Temperatures will be chilly in the low to mid-30s and will drop to the 20s by the evening. Clouds will increase during the afternoon, and later in the evening, snow showers will begin falling from West to East.
The National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning starting at 10 p.m. Sunday night and ending at 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Storm Team4 Meteorologist Doug Kammerer went live on Facebook on Sunday to give a preview of Monday's snow and said that most of the region will get mostly snow and barely any ice.
"Everybody is going to be getting snow out of this one," Kammerer said on Facebook. "Whether you get snow to sleet to freezing rain back to snow, everybody is going to get a good storm."
Snow showers are expected to begin late Sunday, beginning west to east, and snow will continue into Monday. There could be a period of mixed precipitation, including sleet and freezing rain. By 7:30 a.m. on Monday, the D.C. metro area is expected to have about 6 inches of snow.
This wintry mix would lower snow totals, but still could slow travel and cause other issues. Slick or icy roads and sidewalks and reduced visibility are concerns. Wet snow and freezing rain could bring down branches, trees or power lines.
Any wintry precipitation that falls early next week will likely stay frozen, or may melt but then refreeze, with a very cold week ahead.
