Storm Team4 Forecast: Wintry feel with blustery winds and Friday rain

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc. Storm Team4 has the weather forecast.

4 things to know about the weather

  1. Wind machine: ON
  2. So much colder
  3. Snow for some Friday
  4. Dry: Saturday through Wednesday

That was quite the blast of wind and rain last evening.

Most areas received nearly an inch of rain and there were many wind gusts above 50 mph. Now that the wind machine is on, it's going to take several days for everything to settle down again.

Westerly winds will frequently gust around 30 mph on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a much more winter-like feel to the air.

Skies have cleared out some since last night's rain moved out and temperatures are mostly in the 40s Thursday morning. Our skies will cloud over by late Thursday morning and there could be a passing sprinkle or two in the afternoon with most areas not getting back above 50°.

The wind will stay up Thursday night as temperatures drop below freezing for areas north and west of Metro D.C.

Wind chills on Friday morning will be in the 20s area-wide so get ready to add an extra layer of warmth. Friday afternoon will look and feel like winter. Mostly cloudy skies and gusty winds will be accompanied by periods of rain between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Daytime highs Friday will barely get above 40° and that will be cold enough to allow wet snow to mix in with the rain. There could even be enough snow to whiten grassy areas in Northern Maryland and the high spots of Northern Virginia. We'll be far enough above freezing to prevent any travel issues.

A slight warmup after Friday's cold weather

Things will improve for the weekend slowly. Saturday will remain very gusty but slightly drier air will allow enough sunshine that temperatures should return to the low 50s. The wind will be less of an issue starting on Sunday as temperatures return to average.

Early next week will come with good travel weather for those coming and going for Thanksgiving. Rain still looks likely on Thanksgiving Day and the day after. Another shot of winter cold will arrive the weekend after Thanksgiving and hang around through the first week of December.
