Storm Team4 Forecast: Calm holiday week after icy precipitation on Christmas Eve morning

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc. Storm Team4 has the weather forecast.

4 things to know about the weather

  1. Ice Chance 5 to 10 a.m.
  2. Above Freezing By Noon
  3. Chilly Through Friday
  4. Rain Likely By Sunday

Expect rain, and potentially a brief period of freezing rain and sleet, early on Christmas Eve before the weather clears up for all your holiday celebrations.

StormTeam4 is in weather alert mode this morning due to the risk of freezing rain and sleet until about 10 a.m.

A weak and moisture-starved storm is heading into New England this morning and will send an area of light precipitation into the DMV.

Temperatures are below freezing at the surface for the entire area this morning, but there is warmer air aloft. This favors either sleet or freezing rain in the first few hours of the morning.

Precipitation totals, whether liquid or frozen, will only be around 0.05 inches at the most so this will not be a big event.  That said, even a little freezing rain could leave a glazing of ice on paved surfaces.  Use extreme caution if you have to go outside before 10 a.m. when temperatures will climb above freezing.  Bridges, overpasses and untreated steps and sidewalks could be very slippery.

This icing concern will not be an all-day issue. Temperatures will eventually climb above 40° and all the rain will be over before 4 p.m.

Cold, dry for Christmas Day and beginning of Hannukah

After we get through today, the rest of the week will be nothing more than cold and dry. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with afternoon highs in the 40s and overnight lows in the 20s and 30s.

Milder air will bring thick clouds in for the weekend.

There's not much of a rain chance on Saturday, but a period of moderate to heavy rain looks likely from Sunday morning into the first half of Monday.

Temperatures will be near 60° during that period so there is no concern for wintry weather.

Temperatures will stay in the 50s for New Year's Eve and Day with showers possible as we ring in 2025.
