4 things to know about the weather
- Great voting weather
- Near 80° Wednesday
- Maybe a shower Thursday
- Higher rain chance Sunday
Election Day here in the DMV, much like the previous 32 days, will be dry.
Warm, dry and breezy to be exact with highs near 75°. Perfect weather to wait in line and talk about something other than politics with your fellow citizens. What should you talk about? The weather, of course, and how warm and dry it has been lately.
2024 is only 0.1° cooler than the warmest year on record (2012) and this is now the second longest dry spell in D.C. weather history. We will tie the record Wednesday as temperatures soar to near 80° once again.
Wednesday will probably be our last 80° day of the year. The latest 80° on record came on Nov. 15, 1993, at Dulles and Nov. 18, 1921, in Washington.
A storm system will pass through the area on Thursday that MIGHT end the dry spell with a few hundredths of an inch of rain. Not enough to alleviate the dry condition but enough to end the streak.

A small chance of rain and warmer weather ahead
Friday and Saturday will see a return of dry, seasonal conditions with highs in the mid-60s and overnight lows in the mid-40s. A much better chance to get over 0.10 an inch of rain will come on Sunday.
Next week will start out mild and dry before a pattern change finally brings a chance for several rainy days in a row next Thursday.
Tropical Storm Rafael is still expected to become a Category 1 hurricane as it crosses over western Cuba tomorrow. By Thursday and Friday, the storm will be in the central Gulf of Mexico with very low confidence on exactly where it will go after that.
The storm will not be in an environment that favors strengthening but it could still bring squally conditions to the Louisiana coast this weekend. Rafael will need to be monitored, but it does not pose a significant threat to the U.S. at this time.
