Storm Team4 Forecast: Trick-or-treat temps to climb to 80° on Halloween

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc. Storm Team4 has the weather forecast.

4 things to know about the weather

  1. Wicked warm today
  2. Dry stretch dies tonight?
  3. Chilly, dry weekend
  4. Warm again next week

South winds and sunshine will push temperatures above 80° Thursday afternoon and challenge record highs for the date.

Our sunny skies will fill with clouds later this afternoon and there could be just a few drops of rain late Thursday night or Friday morning as a cold front passes.

Reaching 80° this late in the year isn't totally unheard of but it is rare. D.C. had reached 80° on Halloween five times in the last 150 years and is likely to do so again this Halloween.

Far more impressive, and record-breaking, is how long it's been since our first 80° this year. Our first 80° this year came 279 days ago on Jan. 26! That's 31 days longer than last year's 248 days which was the old record. And in 2022, it was 244 days between our first 80° on March 7 and our last 80° on Nov. 7.

For some perspective, on average the number is only 190 days running from April 5 through Oct. 14. In 2004, our first 80° didn't come until April 17 and our last one came on Sept. 23 for a difference of only 158 days. There's also a growing chance that we could reach 80° again next week.

Cooler temperatures to come after a warm Halloween over the weekend

Sunshine will return on Friday afternoon with highs well into the 70s once again. Colder air will settle in for the weekend.

Highs on Saturday and Sunday will stay in the low to mid-60s with overnight lows close to 40°.

Monday will be mostly cloudy as the warm air returns. Highs near 70° on Monday will climb to near 80° on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There still no signs of a soaking rain coming anytime soon.
