Paris Olympics full medal standings

Gold medals are nice for a reason — they add three points to a country's "weighted total." Silver nets a nation two, and one point for each bronze medal.

The medal podiums are being set up all around Paris. Gold is the most coveted but why? Perhaps it has something to do with who wins the "weighted total" at the end of the Summer Games.
