Sousa Middle School in Southeast D.C. will be closed again Tuesday as cleaning continues after the school was vandalized over the weekend.
Someone broke into the school Sunday and set off a number of fire extinguishers, leaving behind the chemical residue. The vandalism was discovered Monday morning.
Workers were seen wearing protective masks during cleanup efforts Monday.
"Maybe it was a prank, but who knows? It was still a bad thing to do ... " said a former student. "It interrupted the education, obviously, and I just think that it shouldn't happen again."
Alicia Norman, the mother of two children at the school, said she's not happy about what happened. "The crime rate is going up. The children are suffering because they can't be in school, of course," she said.
Students can go to Sousa between 10 a.m. and noon Tuesday to pick up a to-go meal, according to a message to parents from D.C. Public Schools.
