The recognition from the Wizards organization is more than deserved for Unseld Sr., the only player in franchise player to win MVP honors, NBA Finals MVP and an NBA title. He was named NBA MVP his rookie season in 1969 and won the NBA championship nine seasons later in 1978 with the Bullets. He remains the franchise's all-time leader in minutes, games and rebounds and is top-five in franchise history in field goals, assists and points. After retirement, Unseld served as the team's vice president, head coach, and general manager.
The unveiling comes just 16 months after Unseld Sr.'s death on June 2, 2020.
The bust will be about 10% over Unseld's life-size head and shoulders, will be made of bronze and weigh 90 pounds. J Brett Gill, who has sculpted presidents, coaches, and other athletes, designed the structure.
Washington opens the season in Toronto before its home opener on Friday night against the Indiana Pacers.
