The Washington Spirit won their first National Women's Soccer League Championship defeating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in extra time.

It took a spirited comeback from Washington to secure the victory. Rachel Hill got the Red Stars on the board first, scoring a goal in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Andi Sullivan evened the score in the 67th-minute knocking in a penalty kick for Washington after Tara McKeown was fouled by Tierna Davidson.

Spirit and U.S. Women's national team defender Kelley O'Hara scored the game-winning goal in extra time on a header thanks to a beautiful cross from NWSL Rookie of the Year Trinity Rodman.

O'Hara's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time, capping off a roller-coaster season both on and off the field for the Spirit.
