Saahdiq Charles Reportedly Has a Calf Injury That Will Likely Force Him to Miss More Time at Camp

Saahdiq Charles was 0-for-3 when it came to participating in the Washington Football Team's open training camp practices this past week, and a new report indicates he could miss more time in the future as well.

The rookie left tackle is battling a calf injury and "is expected to miss additional days," according to The Athletic's Ben Standig. On Tuesday, Ron Rivera described the issue as "minor" but wouldn't go into any detail beyond that.

With each missed session, Charles' chances of earning the starting left tackle job diminish. The fourth-round choice out of LSU was thought to have a real opportunity to lock down that spot, but at some point, he's just going to be too far behind.

In his absence, Geron Christian has taken the most snaps with the first group on offense. On Thursday, though, Christian was given a day off, which allowed Cornelius Lucas to see those reps.

Overall, the offensive line has been a bit of a mess, at least on the days that the media has been invited to watch practice in Ashburn. Things were particularly ugly on Thursday, as the entire offense really looked futile.

Long term, Charles still has plenty of talent and could develop into a player far better than his draft status suggests. Short term, however, this injury is surely disappointing for him and the coaching staff, and it takes away a piece of the depth up front, if not much more.
