Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III is making a career change after an eight-year career as a pro.

Griffin will join ESPN as an NFL and college football analyst on a multi-year contract. He still wants to play in the NFL, but will take on this new role for the time being.

Griffin will call a weekly ESPN/ABC college game, and contribute to ESPN’s coverage of the College Football Playoff, Super Bowl and other major events.

“Robert has been on our radar for a while and we expect him to make an immediate impact on our college and NFL coverage,” ESPN senior vice president of production Lee Fitting said in a statement. “His knowledge of the game, his fresh-off-the-field insights and his charisma make him uniquely positioned to move into this new role, and we are particularly excited to have him call a big college game every week.”

Griffin became a superstar immediately after entering the NFL in 2012. Washington took him with the No. 2 pick in that year's draft and watched him lead the franchise to a surprising NFC East division title. Injuries kept Griffin from recapturing the magic he found in his rookie year, as he ultimately spent just three seasons as Washington's quarterback.

Following a two-year absence from the NFL, Griffin served as a backup quarterback for the Browns and Ravens. He spent the last three seasons of his career in Baltimore, though he only made two starts as a Raven.

“Knowing how much the game of football helps shape lives, and understanding the aspects of the commitment it entails, is why I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join ESPN for both college and NFL programming," Griffin said. "I look forward to being around the players, coaches and fans while providing unique insight to bring the game to life for the viewers.”
