Reports: UNC to promote Hubert Davis to replace Roy Williams originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Hubert Davis is reportedly set to replace North Carolina's legendary retired coach Roy Williams, a hire that would make Davis the first Black coach in Tar Heels program history. The Charlotte Obersver was first to report the news.

Davis has spent the last nine seasons as an assistant under Williams, coaching for the school where he starred playing under another legend, Dean Smith. After taking the Tar Heels to the 1992 Final Four (their first since winning the title in 1982), Davis helped Williams and North Carolina win the 2017 national championship.
Davis reportedly has had the backing of Williams and prominent alumni. Williams announced his retirement from his own Hall-of-Fame career on Thursday after three national championships and 900 wins at Kansas and North Carolina.
After Davis graduated following four stellar seasons from 1988-92, he played 12 seasons for six different NBA teams (including the Wizards) after getting selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1992 draft.

But before North Carolina and before Davis hit the game-winning free throws over the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the 1994 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, he was a legend playing in Northern Virginia during his high school days at Lake Braddock Secondary in Burke, Va.
