After a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Atlanta Hawks have re-signed versatile young big man John Collins to a contract extension worth $125 million over five years, according to ESPN.

That should help fortify one of the East's top teams. Collins, only 23, has developed from the 19th overall pick in 2017 to a player who could have some All-Star appearances in his future.

Last season, he averaged 17.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and a block per game all while shooting 55.6% from the field and 39.9% from three. He's become a great complement for star guard Trae Young.

For years,ย there was speculation Collins would leave the Hawks, who were unwilling to meet his asking price. He just kept getting better and better and this past season helped Atlanta break through to the conference finals, leaving the Hawks with little choice.

Though they have a deep bench of big men highlighted by Clint Capela and 2020 sixth overall pick Onyeka Okongwu, Collins is the team's second-best player behind Young and still presents upside.

The Hawks have a chance to improve their team just by letting their young players develop. Even though he is now handsomely paid, Collins remains in that category. Atlanta was one of the final two teams left in the East this past year and figures to be right back in the mix in 2021-22.
