Max Scherzer Named All-Star Game Replacement, Will Make Eighth Appearance

Nationals ace Max Scherzer is set to make his eighth all-star game appearance next week.

The MLB announced Scherzer as one of four National League all-star replacements on Saturday, joining Dodgers' Walker Buehler, Mets' Taijuan Walker, and Brewers' Freddy Peralta.

Just one of the five NL pitchers voted as all-stars this year has opted to participate in the mid-summer showdown - Milwaukee's Corbin Burnes. San Francisco's Kevin Gausman and Milwaukee's Brandon Woodruff are both scheduled to pitch on Sunday, and the quick turnaround to Tuesday's big event on Tuesday night proved to be too little rest.

Mets and Padres stars Jacob deGrom and Yu Darvish also won't participate this year. Darvish exited Thursday's start with back and hip tightness, while deGrom likely needs the rest after tearing through the first half of the season with 146 strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA. deGrom advocated for his Mets teammate, Walker, to get the nod for the first time in his career and sure enough, he got just that.

For Scherzer, the call-up is another resume builder for a growing list of career accolades. The three-time Cy Young winner was named an all-star for seven straight seasons from 2013-2019 before getting injured in his first 2020 appearance. Now back at full health, it'll be great to see Scherzer back at the mound for the special occasion in Denver.

Scherzer, 36, sports a 7-4 record this campaign with a 2.66 ERA in 17 appearances.
