After taking a 2-1 series lead with a dominant performance against the Florida Panthers on Saturday, the Capitals carried over their momentum into Game 4 on Monday with an early first-period goal.

John Carlson fired a shot from the high slot that deflected off T.J. Oshie’s shin and bounced past Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to put Washington up 1-0 on a power play.

Both Carlson and Oshie have had a busy first-round series and the goal moved each of them up the Capitals’ all-time playoff leaderboards.

Carlson’s assist marked the 72nd point of his Stanley Cup playoff career, tying the defenseman with former center Dale Hunter for the third most in franchise history. Meanwhile, Oshie moved past Hunter with his 26th playoff goal for sole possession of fifth place.

The Capitals are hoping to pull off a massive first-round upset over the Presidents’ Trophy winners. With Carlson (one goal, two assists over first three games) and Oshie (two goals) leading the way, it was only a matter of time before the Capitals’ veterans started making some history.
