D.C. United Wins Inaugural Capital Cup Tournament With Win Vs. Alajuelense

D.C. United has been crowned Capital Cup champions following their 1-0 victory over Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.

The Black-and-Red initially defeated Alajuelense a few days ago by the same score. However, the other club that was supposed to participate in this summer tournament during a Major League Soccer break in El Salvador's Alianza FC had to pull out due to health and safety protocols. Previously, Mexico's Club Puebla skipped the event for the same reason.

As a result, it became a two-leg affair between United and Alajuelense. United carried a 1-0 advantage into the second leg, and the lone goal came at the 68th-minute mark when Jovanny Bolívar beat two defenders to make it 1-0 in the match and 2-0 on aggregate.

Following a week off from MLS action, United will return to league action on July 17 when it travels to Subaru Park with a matchup against the Philadelphia Union.

United hopes to carry this momentum from the Capital Cup and its previous MLS fixture when it defeated Toronto FC 7-1.

Manager Hernán Losada's squad finds itself one point out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
