Sims: Commanders' has 'nice little ring to it,' loves jerseys originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
A member of Washington's NFL franchise since 2018, Cam Sims has seen the team's name go from Redskins, to Football Team, to now the Commanders.
The 26-year-old wide receiver, who just re-signed with Washington on a one-year deal last week, met with local media via Zoom on Wednesday for the first time since the franchise rebranded. It's safe to say Sims is a fan of the change.
"Commanders, it's got a nice little ring to it," Sims said, smiling. "I like it."
While Sims' endorsement of Washington's new moniker was positive, not everyone in the locker room is a big fan of "Commanders." During the name reveal on Feb. 2, team captain Jonathan Allen said the locker room was split 50-50 on the new moniker.
Although Sims is a fan of the team's new name, it's the team's new uniforms that the wide receiver truly got excited about.
"The jerseys, man, that's crazy," Sims said. "I can't wait to put them on. The jerseys go wild."
Washington's rebrand kept the franchise's historic burgundy and gold colorway, but both the home and away uniforms look different than the traditional look both the team ecently wore. Additionally, the Commanders will have a third alternate black uniform -- the first time Washington has sported an all-black look.
As far as on-the-field related topics, Sims said he's looking forward to playing alongside new quarterback Carson Wentz, who has historically targeted bigger wideouts like Sims. He also mentioned he's already spoken to his new quarterback and that there's a plan in place to get him more targets in 2022. He's unsure what number he will sport, though, since Wentz will be rocking the No. 11 next season.
Sims had the choice to sign elsewhere this offseason but ultimately chose to remain with the only franchise he's ever known. He said he's excited about the opportunity and the direction the Commanders are headed.
"I've been here numerous years, and I can tell where this team is headed, and it's headed in the right direction," Sims said. "I feel I can help the team win."
