Ian Desmond Caps Off Productive June With Monster Two-Run Home Run

Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond capped off his highly productive June with a 2-for-4 performance, driving in three of Washington's runs in a 13-2 rout of the New York Mets Sunday.

Two came via a monster two-run homer off backup catcher Anthony Recker, who was making his professional pitching debut in relief.

After hitting six home runs and collecting 20 RBIs in April and May combined, Desmond hit nine and drove in 28 in June, respectively. In terms of RBIs, Desmond's month was the most productive in a calendar month by a shortstop since Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki had 40 in Sept. 2010.

The Nationals are 41-40 at the midway point of the season, 6.5 games behind the first-place Braves in the NL East.
