Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is requesting that President Donald Trump make the Sunshine State the home of the Space Force.
DeSantis proposed the Space Force agency be headquartered at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.
"This is part of Florida's history and is a logical fit for our state," DeSantis wrote in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
DeSantis also announced Tuesday he has named Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez the chair of the Space Florida state agency.
"Her bold leadership will lead the agency to greater heights in this exciting new age of space exploration," DeSantis wrote on Twitter.
Trump is moving closer toward his goal of creating a Space Force, just not as the separate military department he envisioned. He signed a directive Tuesday establishing the Space Force.
If approved by Congress, the Space Force would be part of the Air Force, just as the Marine Corps is part of the Navy. It would not have its own full-blown bureaucracy, including a civilian secretary. It would instead have a Senate-confirmed undersecretary for space within the Air Force.

It would be the first new uniformed military service since 1947, when the Air Force was created after World War II.
