Workers Burned in Laurel Auto Shop Fire

Two workers suffered severe burns in a small explosion inside a Laurel auto body shop Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the Sport Collision Center at 5310 Minnick Rd. at about 8 a.m.

The fire started in an area where vehicles are air-dried following work and appears to have been caused by a vapor explosion, Prince George's County Fire Spokesman Mark Brady said.

One of the workers suffered second and third degree burns over 50 percent of his body. Brady says he was taken to a Baltimore area burn unit in critical condition. A second employee was transported to a D.C. burn center with less serious burns.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
