Repairs Complete After Water Main Mess in Dupont Circle

D.C. has had 88 broken water mains so far this month. News4’s Jackie Bensen reports on the repairs in Dupont Circle.

R Street reopened Thursday morning between Connecticut Avenue and 21st Street NW after crews spent most of the night repairing a water main break.

Water was shut off at 8 p.m. Wednesday after hours of excavation, affecting one building and one restaurant. Water in the area has since been restored.

Crews were still working to repair the break Thursday morning. Work wrapped up just after 6 a.m.

Wednesday night, water flowed in front of the Sette Osteria restaurant at the corner of Connecticut and R Street. General Manager Mehti Zorgani said he was frustrated with the situation.

"Imagine people making plans and last minute to call them saying, 'By the way, sorry, tonight we're closed,'" he said.

Zorgani said a water break happened in the same place last summer.

Additional work will be scheduled in the days ahead after another issue that needs repair was discovered, according to DC Water. That work will be coordinated with the commercial properties in the area.

D.C. has had 88 water main breaks so far this January.
