The wife of a Memorial Day Weekend double homicide suspect fought with one of the victims before the shooting, witnesses told police, and an 11-year-old child identified the shooter, investigators said.
Suspect Alonzo Lewis' wife got into a physical fight with one of the victims, 35-year-old Venius Badgett, in a courtyard in the unit block of Galveston Street SW Saturday evening, according to court documents. Badgett's husband, 40-year-old Jaquon Helm, broke up the fight.
As Badgett and Helm walked away, Lewis' wife called him to the scene, according to court documents. That's when an 11-year-old child saw Lewis shoot the couple, investigators say. Helm was pronounced dead at the scene, and Badgett died at a hospital, leaving behind five children.
The child who witnessed the slayings identified Lewis as the suspect.
Lewis is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. A D.C. judge denied him bond Friday.
Helm's friend, Ward 8 Council member Trayvon White, said he was a youth sports coach and community leader.
Badgett was a Prince George's County school bus driver, the school district confirmed.
