Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia are sharing a multimillion dollar settlement after suing Google Inc. over claims that the company violated consumer privacy.
Virginia will receive more than $392,000 as part of the multi-state settlement, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli announced Monday. Maryland will receive $1 million; there's no word on how much D.C. will receive. In all, the states and the District will share $17 million.
The payment settles allegations that Google, the Internet search engine, altered its coding to circumvent default privacy settings on Apple's Safari web browser to allow advertisers to set tracking cookies. The company stopped the practice in February 2012 after it was widely reported in the media.
