Va. Family Killed in Mobile Home Fire

Grandfather only person to escape

Four family members, including a nine-year-old boy, were killed in a mobile home fire just four days before Christmas.

The fire started late Friday evening at their home near Churchville in Augusta County, about 30 miles outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.

According to Charlottesville/Harrisonville NBC station WVIR, Gordon Stokes told police that his nine-year-old grandson woke him up during the night to tell him the porch was on fire. Stokes said he ran for the door, believing his grandson was by his side.

Somehow, though, the boy did not make it out.

The boy’s parents and grandmother were also killed.

Firefighters are still investigating, and have not determined what caused the deadly fire. They say it does not appear the home had smoke detectors.
