Man Shoots, Kills Teen He Suspected of Breaking Into Cars in Northeast: DC Police

NBC Universal, Inc.

A teenage boy is dead after a man who thought he saw someone "tampering with a vehicle" shot him in Northeast D.C. on Saturday, authorities say.

Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of Quincy Street NE in the Brookland neighborhood at about 4 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the victim, 13-year-old Karon Blake of Northeast, suffering from gunshot wounds, D.C. police said.

An investigation has so far revealed that a man inside of a residence in the area heard noises and saw someone that appeared to be "tampering with a vehicle."

News4's Derrick Ward reports on the investigation and possible suspects.

The resident stepped outside armed with a registered gun, and after an interaction between him and the teen, opened fire, according to authorities. Neighbors said they heard four to five gunshots during the incident.

Karon was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to police.

Two "juvenile males" were also allegedly seen running away from the scene, authorities said.

At least two cars were damaged in the block of the shooting. Video shows a blue car and a white SUV with a windshield on the ground nearby at the scene. Another car was also towed away from the area earlier on Saturday.

Police are still investigating if the damage to those vehicles or any attempted carjacking is connected to the shooting.
