A team-building activity for a group of Alexandria school administrators turned into a big surprise for them and some students. News4’s Aimee Cho reports.
Talk about a sweet surprise.
What started out as a team-building activity turned into the chance to watch kids get brand new bicycles.
Administrators with Alexandria City Public Schools built the bikes by hand Monday, as part of a team-building activity.
Then, to their surprise, 40 kids from the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority showed up in person to pick up the bikes. As the kids walked into the cafeteria at T.C. Williams High School, they were greeted by a standing ovation.
Kelly Davis, the assistant principal at the T.C. Williams Minnie Howard Campus, said she was excited when the kids walked in.
“Every day I come to work and work with kids I’m making a difference, so it’s just even better to see the end product,” Davis said.
Elementary school student Zaniyah Bolden was one of the kids who received bikes. She said her old bike was broken, and she’d been hoping for a new one.

“I can ride it to the park, I can ride it to the store, or I can just ride it around the neighborhood,” Bolden said. “My legs won’t be tired no more.”
Another student, Tre Shaun, said he looks forward to riding his bike and playing with it whenever he is bored.
“I would just like to say thank you [to the administrators], because I really like it,” Shaun said.
Each of the kids also went home with a new helmet and bike lock.
