SWAT Teams To Help Control Va. Deer Population

Fairfax County is planning to use a variety of methods this season to control its deer population.

Shotgun and muzzleloader hunters can apply for a lottery spot in a series of managed hunts. Archers can apply in a similar lottery. And police SWAT teams participate in a special sharpshooting
program.

The deer management programs begin next month, and public meetings offering information for the archery hunts begin Tuesday evening in Annandale.

Last year's program harvested 815 deer, the most since the program began in 1998. The archery hunt was responsible for a majority of the harvest.
