Assault Suspect Crashes Car in Front of Trump Hotel in DC

Five people have been injured, including the suspect, police say

Witnesses say dozens of police cruisers swarmed around an assault suspect who crashed into another car near the Trump International Hotel. News4’s Darcy Spencer spoke with two witnesses who saw what happened.

An assault suspect has crashed a car near the Trump International Hotel, police say.

The suspect who was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon crashed into another vehicle at 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, police said. Several D.C. police cruisers swarmed the area immediately after the crash.

Five people injured, including the suspect, have been taken to hospitals, police said. No injuries are life-threatening, according to police.

Police told people to avoid the area as they investigated.

Stephen Port was at the hotel's clock tower when he saw the scene unfold. He captured video from above of several officers taking the suspect into custody.

"We were sitting up there, looking around. That's my first time up there. They say that's the best view. Apparently, it was a good view because we heard the sirens and then we looked down and there were probably 30 to 40 police cars who had all converged on a single spot," Port said.

"You're sitting there thinking, 'My God. I can't believe 30 seconds ago we're having a glass of wine, a nice lunch, a beautiful sunny day - talking about how beautiful it is here in D.C. and then that unfolds not even a hundred feet from where we were sitting," said witness John Carter.
