Police are talking to the survivor of Thursday morning’s shooting on Interstate 295 in southwest D.C.
Two men were found shot in a bullet-riddled SUV along the northbound lanes of I-295. Pedro Melendez Alvarado, 50, of Alexandria, Virginia, died at the scene, police said.
The other victim is in a hospital with a bullet lodged in the side of his face that can’t be removed because it’s too close to a saliva gland. His son, 23-year-old Miguel, said he can’t understand why anyone would want to harm his father and Alvarado. They worked as maintenance men and had no enemies, Miguel said.
Miguel said his father told him he and Alvarado noticed a black pickup truck trailing them for several minutes after they crossed the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on their way to work.
The vehicle passed them and then returned, spraying their SUV with bullets. Miguel said his father quickly reclined his seat, which he believes saved his life.
Police gathered evidence from the scene and spoke extensively to Miguel's father, who said he saw a car with four or five men inside before someone pulled the trigger.
Police have not released a suspect or vehicle description, and they're continuing to ask anyone who has information about the shooting to call police right away.
I-295 was closed for several hours while the shooting was investigated.
