One northbound lane of the George Washington Memorial Parkway reopened about Tuesday, but work continues on a massive sinkhole.
Both northbound lanes of the GW Parkway were closed between Virginia Route 123/Chain Bridge Road and I-495/Capital Beltway Friday after a 10-foot sinkhole opened up.
Transportation Reporter Adam Tuss reported northbound traffic was backed up a little over an hour after the lane reopened.
The National Park Service says the other lane will remain closed for at least six weeks as crews continue to try to permanently repair the sinkhole.
"We are doing everything we can so that drivers who are traveling on the parkway will have safe smooth drives,” National Park Service spokesperson Jonathan Shafer said.
Steady rain on Saturday and Sunday prevented the NPS from making repairs and opening on time for the Monday evening rush hour.
