State Department Employee Struck and Killed Riding Bike in Bethesda

A State Department employee was struck and killed while riding a bike in Bethesda, Maryland, Thursday.

Sarah Joan Langenkamp, 42, was in the bicycle lane when a flatbed truck turned right into a parking lot in the 5200 block of busy River Road just north of the Little Falls Parkway and the Capital Crescent Trail and struck her, police said. Langenkamp died at the scene.

Police closed the road to investigate.

The truck driver initially left the scene not realizing a person had been hit but then returned, police said.

Montgomery County police examined the exterior and undercarriage of the truck.

The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. There's no word on whether the driver will face any charges.

Langenkamp, a mother of two, is mentioned in numerous international publications as head of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.

In a statement to News4, a State Department spokesperson said, “We are aware of reports of a State Department employee who was killed while riding her bicycle in Bethesda, Maryland. We extend our deepest condolence to the victim's family and loved ones.”

Last month, another State Department employee was killed on her bike at 21st and I streets in Northwest D.C. Shawn O’Donnell was struck and killed by a commercial truck. Her family said she biked to work every morning.

O’Donnell worked as a State Department foreign service officer.
