It was a crime that devastated a university and shocked the nation. Now the University of Virginia women’s lacrosse team is dedicating their season to Yeardley Love and has retired her jersey.
The No. 1 jersey worn by Love was retired Sunday, never to be worn again. The team presented a framed jersey to Love’s family before a home game against Penn State in Charlottesville. They won 10-5.
Five seniors from last year’s team also returned to raise a flag that will fly in Love’s honor at all women’s lacrosse home games.
Love, a Cockeysville, Md. native, was found dead 10 months ago in her apartment. Her boyfriend and former U.Va. men’s lacrosse player, George Huguely, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. A preliminary hearing in his case is slated for April 11.
