Senate Leaders Tout “Tremendous Progress” on Shutdown Deal

Senate leaders said Monday evening that they are closing in on a deal to end the government shutdown and raise the debt limit, as key lawmakers met to hammer out the details. “We’ve made tremendous progress. Everyone just needs to be patient,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, adding, “perhaps tomorrow will be a bright day. We are not there yet.” His GOP counterpart, Sen. Mitch McConnell, echoed that optimism. “I think it’s safe to say we’ve made substantial progress,” he said.
