Police fatally shot a man near the Bloomingdale's store at Tysons Corner Center Wednesday night, Fairfax County police say.

One man was shot in the upper body in the 8100 block of Fashion Boulevard, police said. Medics took him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and he died a short time later, police said.

In a news conference Wednesday night, Police Chief Kevin Davis said loss prevention officers at the mall called Fairfax County police about a theft in progress. He said officers responded and approached the suspect, who fled.

The man was chased on foot by a uniformed officer and a plainclothes officer from inside the mall to a small wooded area across from the parking lot, about a quarter mile distance, Davis said.

For a reason still under investigation, the police chief said both officers fired at the suspect in the wooded area.

It is not known if the suspect was armed, Davis said. Detectives are waiting until daylight to search the wooded area. Davis also did not describe the nature of the theft which prompted the original call.

Davis said the two officers involved in the shooting were part of a team permanently assigned to the Tysons mall area.

Video from Chopper4 shows a large number of police cruisers, firetrucks and an ambulance at the back of the parking lot outside of Bloomingdale's. It appeared first responders were also in a wooded area near the parking lot.

No officers were injured, police said.

Davis said the uniformed officer had a bodycam, and that that footage will be released to the community within 30 days.
