Sailboat Hits Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

The captain of a sailboat escaped injury after the vessel hit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

A 35-foot sailboat lost power and hit the southbound span exiting the tunnel at 4:48 a.m. Thursday, bridge-tunnel operations director and police chief Edward Spencer told WVEC-TV.

The boat apparently hit land at an island near the bridge-tunnel first, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert.

A Coast Guard crewman helped the sailboat captain start the vessel's engine and untangle its sail. The captain then took the sailboat to a marina in Norfolk.

Spencer said the bridge-tunnel wasn't damaged, and travel wasn't interrupted.
