Ronald Kirby's Widow Speaks Out After Murder

An Alexandria woman spoke to News4’s Chris Gordon about her grief over the loss of her husband. Ron Kirby was shot to death in their Alexandria home Monday. Police are still searching for his killer.

The widow of a government official found shot and killed earlier this week told News4 she thinks a door to their home may have been left unlocked.

Ronald Kirby, 69, was shot multiple times in the torso and found in his Alexandria Monday afternoon by a relative. Police said there were no signs of forced entry into Kirby's home.

Kirby's widow, Anne Gray Haynes, told News4 her husband was working from home Monday and that she thinks a door may have been left unlocked.

"Ron had no enemies," Gray Haynes said. "The only reason somebody would have come in here is they thought they could get cash or something of value and they thought the house was empty and unfortunately it wasn't."

Kirby was the director of the department of transportation planning for the Council of Governments, an interstate association that helps counties around D.C. with development, growth and transportation planning.

Kirby and Gray Haynes married a little over a year ago. He had two children from a previous marriage.

"He was a fabulous and wonderful person and I felt very lucky to be his wife," Gray Haynes said. "I loved him very much and I know he loved me."

Alexandria Police held a news conference Thursday, saying they had no leads in the case. Earlier in the week, officers told News4 neighbors should not be concerned about their safety.

"Any investigation that you have somebody killed in their home, family as well as strangers are [possible suspects]," Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook said. "We have not eliminated anyone."

For now, Gray Haynes is trying to reorganize her life without Kirby.

"We had trips planned, including Thanksgiving, and someone just took his life away from me and I'm not sure what I'm going to do next," she said.

The police investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section of the Alexandria Police Department at 703-746-6711.
