Another Raw Sewage Leak in Olney, Maryland

A pipe in Olney, Maryland, leaks raw sewage for the third time in a couple of weeks. Zachary Kiesch reports.

Raw sewage is flowing in Olney, Maryland, near the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts, after a break in a 20-inch pressurized sewer main.

The pipes, located at 2114 Rose Theatre Circle, are near the two leaks that were repaired July 29 and 30, according to a statement from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

The amount of sewage cannot be determined at this time.

At about 10:15 a.m., the Olney Wastewater Pumping Station was shut down. Septic haulers were placed to prevent any more leaks and contractors await the parts needed to fix the break.

WSSC will also put a camera inside the pipe to better understand the condition of the pipes and find a permanent solution.

Affected areas are marked with warning signs, including Lake Hallowell, and the Maryland Department of the Environment and the surrounding community have been notified.

The wastewater system is not connected to the WSSC’s drinking water system.

Browns Bridge Recreation Area remains closed from the two other recent breaks.

Wednesday's leak was more contained.
