They are sugary. They are gooey. And they were eaten in great quantities.
Competitive eaters challenged each other and themselves on Saturday during the World Peeps Eating Championship. The competition was held at the National Harbor at 1 p.m.
Matt Stonie, from San Jose, California was declared the winner and took home $1,750.
Stonie previously set a world record for eating the most Peeps in one sitting and was challenged by eight other professional eaters, including Juliet Lee, from Germantown, Maryland.
“I am delighted to be part of this exciting competition,” said Sam Barclay, with Major League Eating, the organization that tracks and ranks the eaters. “It is unusual for any eating contest to attract four of the top ten eaters as this one has.”
There was also an amateur Peep eating contest at noon and music throughout the afternoon with visits by Peeps characters and a kid’s “Dance Like a Peep” contest at 12:30 p.m. Some of National Harbor’s restaurants also participated with Peeps drinks and desserts.
