About a week after coming under fire for a controversial decision - the principal at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford County resigned.
Tuesday night, the county school board accepted Karen Spillman's resignation.
Spillman suspended 14-year-old Bryan Thompson for 10 days after he dressed up in a banana costume and ran across the football field during halftime at his school's game.
A spokeswoman for the school did not give a reason for her resignation.
Spillman had been criticized for her handling of the so-called banana man incident. The school will appoint an interim principal shortly, but until then, Dr. Lisa Martin, the assistant superintendent for seconday education, will take charge of the high school.
Bryan Thompson's suspension was lifted after his mom appealed.
