More than 100 rounds were fired in the 2700 block of Wade Road SE after 3 p.m., police said. The woman who was shot was sitting in her car when she was hit three times, according to police.

"I mean, it's just tragic. It's a tragic situation," Cmdr. John Branch said. "She does work here. She's a manager of a property, but we just believe that potentially she could've just been here at the wrong place, wrong time."

In addition to hitting the woman, bullets hit cars and buildings, Branch said.

A number of officers could be seen for hours in the area south of Suitland Parkway.

No information on suspects or a possible motive was immediately released. Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to contact police.
