It's a hot and humid Saturday, with the potential for showers and thunderstorms in the region.
Temperatures soared into the mid-90s for most of the region Saturday afternoon. The record high at Washington Dulles International Airport is 93, and the record high at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 101, set back in 1911.
Because of the high temps and high humidity, there is a Code Orange air quality alert in effect until midnight. A Code Orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases, and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.
Anyone expecting to be outdoors for an extended period of time should also use sunscreen and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Potentially strong storms could pop up in spots as the air gains energy from the rising heat throughout the day.
