A man died after a police-involved shooting in southeast D.C. Monday night, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 4200 block of Sixth Street SE about 10:30 p.m. Monday. According to authorities, a man matching the description was stopped as he was walking two Yorkshire terriers.
When police confronted the man, later identified as Dominique Campbell, 41, of Southeast, he pulled a gun and fired at the officer, according to police.
"As he arrives on the scene, he sees a person that is matching the description of the person that was given and he is fired upon by that person," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. "He then returns fire and strikes the suspect."
After an exchange of gunfire, Campbell was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released.
The investigation into why the man allegedly opened fire on police is ongoing.
Campbell's wife, Chante Campbell, told News4's Pat Collins her husband couldn't have fired a shot because he was talking to her on his cell phone in one hand while holding the dogs' leashes with the other.
"I heard the gunfire," she said. "It was about five shots. I put on some shorts, I put on a T-shirt and I ran out the door, hopped in my car and went around the corner, and they wouldn't let me see him. They tried to handcuff me. The police tried to handcuff me to prevent me from seeing him, and they left him laying on the ground like a dead animal in the street."
Sources said police have evidence supporting their account of the incident.
According to his sister, Dominique Campbell had served time in the past for carrying a gun but had never shot anyone, Collins reported. She said he was carrying the gun last night because someone tried to take the dogs from him earlier that day.
Another shooting injured two people just a few blocks away on V Street, police said.
Officials told News4 two men were shot in the 1500 block of V Street SE. One man was shot in the foot. The second man was shot in the arm. Both victims are expected to make full recoveries.
No arrests have been made at this time.
