Plaxico Burress Coming to Washington!

Not to play for the Redskins, however. The ex-Giants star and Super Bowl hero is coming here to talk about guns.

Burress is trying to get back into football after figuratively shooting himself in the foot while literally shooting himself in the leg. He has been in jail for the last couple seasons.

His jailtime came out of a November 2008 incident at a New York nightclub. Burriss was out clubbing with New York Giants teammate and former Redskins linebacker Antonio Pierce when a gun Burress had stuffed in his pants for self-protection accidentally discharged, firing a round through his thigh and into the club floor.

Turns out Burress wasn't licensed to carry the weapon in New York.

Prosecutors, alleging the misfired bullet almost hit a club employee after hitting Burress, threw the book at the receiver, and he caught it: Two years in a New York prison. Quite a quick fall for the guy who caught the Super Bowl winning pass from Eli Manning in the 2008 Super Bowl.

Since being released from jail, Burress has used his Q Rating to bring attention to the works of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun-control advocacy group founded by Reagan aide and John Hinckley victim James Brady and his wife, Sarah Brady.

Burress will make another appearance with the group next Friday here in D.C.  to drum up interest in what the Center describes as "an extensive report on the impact of guns in sports."

According to the group, the report resulted from studying "more than 100 cases of gun incidents in sports, highlighting athletes or coaches at every level of competition who have been wounded, killed, or who have lost loved ones, or who have had their careers and lives adversely affected by guns."

Burress, who was cut by the Giants after he shot himself and can't sign with any team until the NFL lockout is over, fits into that sample group.

Full release after the jump.
