Man hurt in police shooting at Rosslyn Metro station

An officer was also taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries

Police say a suspect was seriously hurt in an officer-involved shooting just after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Rosslyn Metro station in Northern Virginia. He was taken to a hospital.

Before going to the Metro station, the suspect went to a Safeway on Wilson Boulevard just before 4 p.m., witnesses said. He wanted food but did not want to pay for it. They told News4 he pulled a steak knife during a heated conversation with the store manager. Then he left, walking out of the store holding the knife.

Two Arlington police officers who responded to a 911 call found a man matching his description a couple blocks away at the North more street entrance to the Rosslyn Metro station. A police spokesman says there was a struggle, and one officer shot the man.

“During that encounter with the officers, a struggle ensued, during which one of the officers discharged their firearms striking the suspect,” said Ashley Savage with the Arlington County Police Department.

The resulting investigation required officers to block streets in the busy area at the height of rush hour. Metro trains passed through the station, but did not stop, leaving commuters scrambling to get home.

Some saw the shooting scene as they tried to enter the station.

“I had a feeling there was some type of shooting,” said a witness at the scene. “Lots of ambulances were going up. I walked over here and I saw a guy laying on the floor.”

One officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

The investigation into the police shooting will be handled by detectives from outside agencies who are part of the Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team.

News4 has been told both officers were wearing body-worn cameras
