One person died in a crash overnight on Florida Avenue in northeast D.C. The crash came close to a gas station’s pumps.

One person has died in a crash that came frighteningly close to a northeast D.C. gas station's pumps.

The crash happened at about 3:15 a.m. at 6th street and Florida Avenue in Northeast. A car was westbound on Florida Avenue when it struck a parked car.

The parked car was sent into the air and crashed into the gas station's sign, knocking it down.

When police arrived, they found the car "engulfed in flames," said Lt. Ronald Wilkins of D.C. Police.

A passenger was found dead in the car, police said. The driver had left the car and was found a short distance away.

Firefighters activated the emergency fuel cutoff at the station.

On Sunday, police identified the driver as 39-year-old Lavonne Beckett, of Hyattsville, Maryland. Police said Beckett was apprehended and charged with negligent homicide.
